Alexa uses a set of tools and applications to determine the flow of traffic to our websites and then rank them accordingly.The most important app is the toolbar which Alexa is using extensively and is very much dependent on. Alexa toolbar and extensions are there for Firefox,IE and Chrome. Everyone who is using this toolbar contribute to ALEXA ranking to their blog or website as well as to others.
So the ranking can be given a clear boost by using the Alexa toolbar. Alexa is also using the data from the app, which as a code we are placing on our webpages
Alexa also use the Inbound links to work on rank as more the relevant inbound links higher is the ranking.
